How To Create Lead Magnets

In this post you’re going to learn how to create lead magnets. Not just any lead magnets, but the best kind, the kind that has your prospects falling all over themselves to throw their emails at you.

Okay, so if you’ve been following the past few posts (here, here, and here) you’re making great strides towards becoming an affiliate. Hopefully at this point, you’ve discovered your niche, and found several hot products to promote to this hungry group. Now you’re asking what’s next? Let’s not put the cart before the horse here.

Meaning, no banner ads, no pay-per-click, no media buys, nothing. Don’t even think about advertising, if you’re going to send your visitors directly to the vendor’s page.

That’s a huge mistake at least at first. See, here’s the thing. You don’t want to send your prospects directly to the vendor’s sales letter at all. Why? Because, if you send all your traffic to the vendor you get bupkis (nothing). For every hundred visitors you might get two or three sales, that’s only 2 or 3 percent. That blows.

Build A List

Can you guess what you want to do instead? Bingo, you got it. You’re going to build a list, you’re going to build a relationship with the people on that list, and you’re going to engage your readers. How do you do that? Simple, you send every last little bit of traffic to your own lead page (If you don’t know what one is that’s another article).

And why do you want to do that you ask? Again simple, your subscribers are going to be hot leads. People who are willing to buy whatever products you recommend because they like and trust you.

What’s A Lead Magnet?

Here’s the thing:

You can’t just toss out some cheesy opt-in form and expect your prospects to just gleefully give you their emails. People just aren’t going to do that. I mean nobody wants to risk you filling up their inbox. Instead what you need to do is entice them by offering an irresistible lead magnet. What is that? It’s a high demand product that you offer in exchange for an email address.

So, what do you offer? Oh, WOW let’s see. You can offer eBooks, reports, software, videos, audios, access to membership sites, multi-party courses, mind maps, worksheets, other tools and resources. Pretty much, anything you can instantly deliver once someone has joined your list. Here’s a little advice in case you’re interested. Don’t just toss out some rehashed old junk, and expect to build a big list. Instead you need to offer people something they really want.

Know Your Market

How do you do that?  What’s the secret of creating a hot in demand lead magnet? Well… know your market, you’ve probably already done your market research. So you know what the top selling products in your niche are. Right? Then it’s pretty simple since you already know what they’re buying just give them something similar for free. You know, if people are buying it, you can bet they’ll snap up your free offer like crazy.

TIP:
You don’t need to create a full-fledged product that competes with the products you’re trying to offer, that doesn’t make sense. Just create something on the same topic. Like a report, short video, or something else. That way you know your free Lead magnet product will be in demand.

Make It Relevant

Here’s something else to think about, your free lead magnet should be directly related to your main affiliate product. As a matter of fact, it should be so related that it naturally leads people who use your free product to want to buy the affiliate offer.

Okay so how about we clarify this a little bit. Here’s three examples of great lead magnets you could create. I like to garden so let’s pretend you’re selling garden planning software.

  • First idea: Create a report that covers one important part of planning a garden, like for instance soil amendments. Anyone who wants to learn more about how to build garden soil will want to purchase the garden planner.
  • Second idea: Offer a free pest identification tool. This might be a little app That has a searchable list of common garden pests and how to eliminate them. Anyone who’s using your app is going to grow a better garden if they use the planner your promoting
  • Third idea: Offer a printable sheet that lists planting times for various vegetables. You know when to plant what and when you can replant.

So, see there’s three different examples of lead magnets. All three are desirable products that naturally lead to the paid product. Even better, the app and the printable planting guide are something that people will refer to frequently. That’s a very good thing because people will see your calls-to-action and your affiliate links on a regular basis.

A Word Of Warning

Just a word of warning here. Don’t use your direct affiliate link in your lead magnet. Why not? You ask. Well, here’s the thing. If the vendor moves the affiliate program to another platform, or cancels the program (it happens), or the product is retired, or maybe you just decide to stop promoting that particular product. Then you’re going to have thousands of lead magnet products floating around with dead or incorrect affiliate links inside. Oh no, no, no, that’s a very bad move.

Instead what you want to do is just use a redirect link through your own domain, so when people click on your web link, that redirects to the affiliate offer. That way if you ever decide to promote something else, or if the affiliate link dies, you just change the redirect link in your own domain and in the blink of an eye, you’re be back in business just like that.

Now It’s Your Turn

So, there you have it one of the keys to building a big list is to offer your prospects some super useful lead magnet. This lead magnet should be something that naturally leads people to buy your affiliate offer. It should be desirable, valuable and something your prospects are going to refer to often. Get this much done and you’re already halfway to creating a big responsive list. Go ahead and take some time right now and figure out what type of lead magnet you can create that’s going to get people scrambling to join your list.
